One breath. No tanks.
How freediving and scuba differ on the south coast.
Sri Lanka offers both scuba and freediving on the south coast in season. They look similar from the beach — boats, wetsuits, fish — but the experience and skill set are different. Here is an honest comparison if you are planning a trip to Unawatuna or Galle.
The basic difference
Scuba divers breathe compressed air from a tank and can stay down longer at recreational depths. Freedivers take one breath, descend, and return on that single lungful — relying on relaxation, equalisation, and efficiency rather than equipment.
Experience underwater
Freediving is silent. No bubbles, less disturbance, often closer approaches from turtles and reef fish. Scuba gives more bottom time to explore wrecks and deeper reef walls with less athletic demand per dive.
Training time
A Discover freediving session is half a day. Molchanovs Wave 1 is three days. Open Water scuba is typically three to four days as well — similar commitment for entry certification, but skills do not transfer automatically.
Cost in Sri Lanka
Discover freediving from €120; Wave 1 from €350 at Lanka Freediving. Scuba fun dives and courses vary by shop — compare what is included (gear, boat, park fees).
Can you do both?
Yes, on a long trip — but not usually the same day. Freediving after scuba requires careful scheduling because of residual nitrogen; we advise separating them by 24 hours or planning freediving first.
Which fits you?
Choose scuba if you want maximum underwater time with less breath-hold stress. Choose freediving if you want minimal gear, a meditative sport, and the challenge of self-reliance on one breath. Many travellers try Discover before committing to either path.
